“Party Politics and the Challenge of Representation in Canada” Alex Marland, Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership (postponed and revised due to weather from 31 October 2025)
Abstract: What are the advantages and challenges of party affiliation for elected representatives? How do political parties help and hinder the ability of MLAs and MPs to represent their constituents authentically? Join us for an engaging discussion featuring Independent MLAs Becky Druhan and Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin, alongside the author of the new book No I in Team: Party Loyalty in Canadian Politics. The conversation will explore how party structures provide organization, stability, and shared purpose, while also constraining independent judgment and responsiveness to local needs -- and what this means for democratic representation.
