Brian Wilson “That Others May Live: The evolution of Ground Search and Rescue in Nova Scotia"
Abstract; In Nova Scotia prior to 1969, ground searches involved community members gathering to find missing loved ones. After a 5-day search for a child in the Cape Breton Highlands, Cape Breton Search and Rescue was formed. A subsequent search for a lost child in the Halifax area was not successful and resulted in the death of the child and a searcher. Subsequently, new teams formed including what is now Halifax SAR, and Valley Search and Rescue in 1971. What used to be ad hoc efforts has evolved into a network of 23 teams with over 1300 volunteers in Nova Scotia. Team members are trained to national standards and use digital mapping, GPS-tracked and TMR radio systems, specialized search management software, drones, amphibious vehicles and statistical approaches to search management which ultimately increases safety and the likelihood of a find. Teams are involved in initiatives such as the Hug-A-Tree Program which teaches children essential survival skills and Project Lifesaver which uses radio tracking to find vulnerable people who are prone to wander.

Biography: Dr. Wilson completed graduate work in neuroscience at the University of Guelph and the University of Bristol, UK earning his PhD from Guelph in 1995. Interested in community service, Brian joined the local fire department to meet people and contribute to his new community. Brian was a volunteer firefighter for 13 years where he served as Captain, Medical First Responder, Driver/Operator, Chair of the Executive Committee and Treasurer. Subsequently, he joined Valley Search and Rescue and for the past 12 years has served as a Team Leader, Instructor, Electronic Search Specialist and Instructor with Project Lifesaver, and serves on the Board of Directors as Secretary and Interim Treasurer.
