The Franklin Expedition by Alex Speers

Abstract: While many Canadians have heard of the Franklin Expedition, they may not be completely familiar with all the circumstances of this tragic story of Franklin's search for the North-West Passage. This review will discuss the fate of 129 British sailors who perished in the high Arctic. The account has intrigued many Canadians (including Stan Rogers). The rapid and high death rate (approaching 100% over five years) was much higher than other British Navy voyages. Initially, scurvy was assumed as the primary cause of death however, exposure to high lead and zinc levels, starvation, infection (TB), botulism, exposure and poor packaging probably played a part in the sailors’ demise from 1845 ~ 1850. Recent discoveries of Franklin’s ships the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror will also be discussed.

Biography: Professor Alex Speers has been a member of the brewing industry for over forty years and during this time he has focused his attention to brewing technical development, research, and teaching. He is an Emeritus Professor in the Canadian Institute of Fermentation Technology (CIFT) at Dalhousie University. and an Honorary Professor of the Int. Centre of Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh. Born in BC, Alex worked at both Labatt’s and Molson’s breweries during and just after his university training. Following his Ph.D. he worked at Acadia for a short time but most of his career he was based at Dalhousie. However., from 2013 until Brexit in 2016, Dr. Speers directed the International Centre of Brewing and Distilling, the world’s largest, English language brewing school. He has also successfully supervised 39 Ph.D. students and M.Sc. students. His research interests include brewing fermentability and modelling, yeast flocculation, CO2 solubility and malt properties. Alex has been awarded the W.J. Eva award by the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology and several other awards from professional brewing societies. He is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Brewers in the UK and a Fellow of the CIBD. He remains intrigued with story of the Franklin Expedition.
