Accessibility for All: Beyond the Built Environment by Katie MacArthur
Abstract: When we think about accessibility, we often picture ramps, automatic door openers, and accessible parking. While these physical features are essential, accessibility extends far beyond the built environment. This presentation will explore the many often-overlooked barriers that people with disabilities encounter in their everyday lives, including communication, digital accessibility, sensory environments, policies, and services. Through practical examples and insights, participants will gain a broader understanding of accessibility, recognize barriers that may otherwise go unnoticed, and discover ways to create more inclusive and welcoming communities for everyone.
Biography: Katie MacArthur has worked in the accessibility field for almost ten years, including over four years with the Municipality of the County of Kings. In her role, she works collaboratively with members of the public and municipal staff to identify barriers, promote inclusion, and improve accessibility throughout the County. Katie is a Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification professional, reflecting her commitment to advancing accessibility and creating more inclusive communities.
Katie lives in Middleton with her husband, who is a schoolteacher, their two children, and two dogs. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and playing pickleball.
Every week, we invite ALL members and members of our local community to join us for a free, casual ALLways Learning Series (formerly Lunchtime Learning Series). We cover topics both big and small in scope, from local to international, and from arts to sciences. We aim to offer lively talks, from engaging speakers, that anyone in the audience can enjoy. No registration is required.
