Sabbatical Showcase From Discovery to Innovation: Advancing Tick Research Through the Canadian Tick Research and Innovation Centre by Nicoletta Faraone
Abstract: What does it take to turn laboratory discoveries into real-world solutions? This presentation highlights my sabbatical journey, from developing innovative tick-repellent technologies to establishing the Canadian Tick Research and Innovation Centre (CTRIC), Canada's first centre dedicated to tick research, surveillance, and innovation.
Biography: Dr. Nicoletta Faraone is a natural products chemist at Acadia University whose research focuses on developing sustainable solutions to ticks and tick-borne diseases in Nova Scotia and across Canada. Her work combines chemistry, ecology, and public health to create safer repellents and control strategies based on essential oils, livestock odours, and soil-derived fungi, with several technologies now moving toward real-world deployment.
She is the founder and director of the Canadian Tick Research & Innovation Centre at Acadia University, Canada’s first dedicated tick research facility, which provides tick colonies, pathogen testing, and specialized expertise to researchers, industry, and public health agencies nationwide. Her leadership and research impact have been recognized with national and regional honours, including the Mitacs Innovation Award for Outstanding Innovation and the Discovery Awards for Science & Innovation Public Impact Award in 2025.
Through her research, partnerships, and community engagement, Dr. Faraone is helping strengthen Canada’s capacity to address the growing public health challenge posed by tick-borne diseases.
Every week, we invite ALL members and members of our local community to join us for a free, casual ALLways Learning Series (formerly Lunchtime Learning Series). We cover topics both big and small in scope, from local to international, and from arts to sciences. We aim to offer lively talks, from engaging speakers, that anyone in the audience can enjoy. No registration is required.
The Sabbatical Showcase is an opportunity for Acadia faculty members to share their research with campus and community. This program is in partnership with Acadia Lifelong Learning's ALLways Learning Series.
