A Passion for Stone by Colin Craig
Abstract: In this presentation, Colin Craig will share how he discovered his passion for stone carving and where it has lead him over the past ten years. From his initial instruction by master stone carver, Heather Lawson, to the formation of his studio, Craig Stone Works, to an always full order book for hand carved headstones, driveway markers, pet memorials and garden sculptures. Colin will share his use of traditional methods, the sourcing of stone, and the the creative process from initial client contact to the installation of a finished work. The only person in Atlantic Canada doing hand cut lettering in stone and one of few doing stone carving by traditional methods, Colin will connect his practice to the history of the craft including a special link to the works of the Horton Carver who used the same methods to create headstones in Nova scotia 200 years ago.
Biography: Colin Craig, Stonecarver, Craig Stone Works. Born and raised in Kentville, Nova Scotia, Colin is now retired and living after six years of happy residency in Wolfville. Colin’s career path began with a desire to be an oceanographer but ended up being that of a public relations professional. Over the course of his career he worked for the NS International Tattoo, the World Trade and Convention Centre, NS Sport and Recreation, the Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Dalhousie University where his final position was that of Director of Marketing for the Faculty of Management. He also spent several years as an entertainment promoter with his own company, Saltydog Promotions. While his career played to his strengths and gave him the opportunity to promote worthwhile ventures, it never tapped into the sense of passion for his work that he has discovered in stone carving. Today he enjoys a thriving practice under the name of his studio, Craig Stone Works. www.craigstoneworks.co
