Music
Critically acclaimed pianist Darrett Zusko is quickly establishing himself as one of today's up-and-coming concert artists, having appeared throughout Canada, the United States, Spain, and the UK. His playing has been praised for having "…flashes of brilliance and power…" (The Cincinnati Enquirer), "…exceptional musicality and virtuosity..." (La Nueva España), and he has been described as having "…a monumental technique wed to a powerful, incisive and informed musical intelligence..." (John Bell Young, Clavier Magazine). A top prizewinner at the Concours Musical International de Montreal (2004) and the New Orleans International Piano Competition (2004), he is also the recipient of numerous other awards including the first prize and People's Choice Award at the Canadian Music Competitions International Stepping Stone (2002), third prize at the International Russian Music Competition in California (2002), and first prize at the Oberlin International Piano Competition (2001). Darrett, just twenty-one, has worked with such distinguished artists as Barry Snyder, Jerome Lowenthal, Anton Kuerti, Boris Slutsky, Daniel Shapiro, Marek Jablonski, Leon Fleisher, and Dominique Weber to name but a few. Prior to college, Darrett studied extensively with renowned pianist Ronald Turini, one of the few privileged students of the legendary Vladimir Horowitz. He has also participated in numerous internationally renowned festivals including the Banff Keyboard Festival, Pianofest in the Hamptons, the Orford Arts Centre, and the Aria Summer Academy. He is currently studying with Julian Martin at the Juilliard School in New York. Darrett Zusko has appeared as soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, l'Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra among many others under the direction of conductors such as Erich Kunzel, Jacques Lacombe, David Currie, Brian Jackson, John Morris Russell, Victor Feldbrill, and JoAnn Falletta. He has also appeared at Canada's renowned Festival of the Sound as soloist and with the Allegri String Quartet, and at Festival Vancouver with the Borealis String Quartet. Of significant importance in Darrett's career has been his collaboration with renowned Canadian composer Harry Somers, shortly before Somers' death. After working with Mr. Somers in Toronto, Darrett gave the premiere of his final work for piano in January 1999. He was also invited to perform the work at the composer's memorial later that year
