My presentation would start with a brief intro on the origins of jazz, including examples either performed by me on my keyboard or on piano (if available). I would then show how any common song could be 'converted' into a jazz-like form. I would discuss jazz 'forms': how players take turns with soloing, what the rhythm section does while another player is taking a solo, how vocalists perform jazz including 'scatting'. I would briefly discuss 'fake' books that musicians use to play 'standards'. I would sum up by telling the listener how to appreciate jazz, what to watch for and why the term 'jazz' shouldn't be something to be avoided.
