An ALLways Learning session as part of the Acadia Lifelong Learning Program. Emily Lutz will speak about the Challenges for Nova Scotia Fruit Growers.
Abstract: Apples have been grown in Nova Scotia for over 400 years. During that time a lot has changed, from the way we plant and design our orchards to the varieties we select to grow here. Today apples are the second largest horticulture crop in Nova Scotia after wild blueberries, and are a key part of Nova Scotia's economy. When you're in a grocery store the variety of apples to choose from can be overwhelming! Where do they all come from? Who picks them all? What happened to Gravenstein, and what is a SweeTango? This talk will speak about the apple industry in Nova Scotia, especially the challenges facing fruit growers, from the pressures of competing with a powerhouse apple growing state like Washington, to the development and marketing of a premium apple like Honeycrisp, to how climate change and government regulation both pose significant challenges to growers' ability to keep farming.
