Following Karl Around the World by Louise Trotter
Abstract: In 1899, twenty-one-year-old Karl Creelman left Bible Hill, Nova Scotia, on a bicycle to become the first Canadian to circle the globe. Armed with letters of introduction, a stamp book, and considerable nerve, he travelled through the infrastructure of empire: railways, steamships, consulates, and colonies, recording his progress in newspapers and letters home.
More than a century later, photographer and writer Louise Trotter set out to retrace his route. In this illustrated talk, Trotter shares Karl's journey and her own side by side: the history that surfaces in an offhand sentence, the strangers who become part of the story, and the persistence it took both of them to keep going. Louise's journey has been registered as an official expedition with the Royal Geographical Society.
Biography: Louise Trotter is a photographer and travel writer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Fuelled by curiosity and a deep desire to understand the unfamiliar, she uses her camera as both a guide and a companion, capturing moments of awe as she explores the world. Her creative practice is currently anchored in Twice Around the World, an international expedition retracing the circumnavigation of fellow Nova Scotian Karl Creelman. The project explores the layers of time, place, and personal narrative that emerge when past and present journeys intersect. She has been commissioned to write Karl Creelman's entry for the Dictionary of Canadian Biography.
Louise has presented Karl's journey and her own at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the Colchester Historeum, and the Canadian Industrial Heritage Centre, and her work has been featured by Saltwire News and CTV. You can find Louise and more about Karl at
