The Ultimate Gift; Inspiring Learning Through Human Donation by Tamara Harvey

Abstract: Have you ever wondered what happens before, during and after full body donation? Tamara Harvey, the manager of the Human Donation Program at Dalhousie University will explain how the registration process works, what happens when a donor passes away and what happens once the donor’s time with the program comes to an end. She will explain the different ways that the donors help to facilitate programs that improve the training of healthcare professionals across the world, what the future holds for human donation and some of the technologies surrounding preparing anatomical specimens. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about the program, the process and learn more about how our future and seasoned medical professionals are trained.

Background: The Human Donation Program was established at Dalhousie University over 100 years ago. The program takes in donors from all three maritime provinces and has thousands of preregistered donors. Around two hundred donors are accepted each year and are instrumental in teaching anatomy, surgical and life saving skills across multiple disciplines in healthcare. Healthcare professionals from all over the world come to our facilities to train with our specialized anatomical material, that no one can replicate, making our program one of the best worldwide.

Biography: Tamara Harvey is a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in the Province of Nova Scotia and has been involved with the Human Donation Program for more than 13 years. She began her career with the program as an Anatomy Technician before transitioning into the role of Program Manager over two years ago.
She holds a Diploma in Health Services Management from Dalhousie University, several anatomy course credits, and a Diploma in Funeral and Allied Health Services from the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). Originally from the Annapolis Valley, she attended Horton High School and then NSCC in Kentville. She completed her apprenticeship and then worked as a Funeral Director and Embalmer in Saint John, New Brunswick for 6 years.
With a longstanding interest in working within an anatomy laboratory setting, Tamara eagerly pursued the opportunity to join the Human Donation Program when a position became available. Her husband, daughter, and she subsequently returned to Nova Scotia, where they now reside in the Windsor area. Their family has since grown to include their son, and they are proud to call the community home.

Every week, we invite ALL members and members of our local community to join us for a free, casual ALLways Learning Series (formerly Lunchtime Learning Series). We cover topics both big and small in scope, from local to international, and from arts to sciences. We aim to offer lively talks, from engaging speakers, that anyone in the audience can enjoy. No registration is required.
