Preserving Community Memories in Story - a Newfoundland Example by Antony Berger
Abstract: Community members in Bonne Bay are working to collect, organize, and make publicly available photos, stories, documents, recordings and other historical materials about this important part of western Newfoundland. I will review this archival project (bonnebayhistory.ca) and illustrate with a few stories, one way that community culture and heritage can be saved for future generations.
Biography: Dr. Antony Berger taught geology at universities in Canada, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia, and worked for the NL and Canadian governments. He has helped to lead international projects working to strengthen earth sciences communities in the global South, developing tools for tracking rapid landscape change, studying past human responses to natural change, and contributing to the new field of medical geology. He has written many scientific articles and books, and for the general public The Good and Beautiful Bay: A History of Bonne Bay to Confederation and a Little Beyond (Flanker 2014) and No Place for a Woman: The Life and Newfoundland Stories of Ella Manuel (Breakwater 2020).
Every week, we invite ALL members and members of our local community to join us for a free, casual ALLways Learning Series (formerly Lunchtime Learning Series). We cover topics both big and small in scope, from local to international, and from arts to sciences. We aim to offer lively talks, from engaging speakers, that anyone in the audience can enjoy. No registration is required.
